Nautical Courses
The Nautical Studies Department courses and training are aimed predominantly at providing the necessary qualifications to fulfil constantly changing legal requirements of the merchant navy, fishing and aquaculture industries. General seamanship, boat handling skills and sea survival training are also provided. Substantial use is made of the Full Mission Bridge Simulator during related training.
All courses listed below can be arranged subject to sufficient student numbers:
Deck short courses
- GMDSS, NARAS and other short safety courses (3.5Mb)
- RYA courses (1.6Mb)
- Net Mending and Construction - develop skills in basic net mending and construction
- Stability Awareness for Fishermen - a requirement of under 16.5m Skipper Ticket and may soon become legal requirement for all fishermen. (Fishermen eligible for funding from Department for Transport/SFIA)
- Safety Awareness for Fishermen - legal requirement for all fishermen
- GMDSS SRC - requirement of under 16.5m Skipper Ticket. (Fishermen eligible for funding from Department of Transport/SFIA)
- 2-Day Engineroom Watchkeeping - requirement of under 16.5m Skipper Ticket. (Fishermen eligible for funding from Department of Transport/SFIA)
- 5-Day Bridge Watchkeeping - requirement of under 16.5m Skipper Ticket. (Fishermen eligible for funding from Department of Transport/SFIA)
- Care of the Catch - advice and instruction for fishermen or others on fish quality, handling, presentation and storage
