FIRST WEEK AT NAFC FOR NEW DIRECTOR

The new director of the NAFC Marine Centre, Professor David Gray, started in post yesterday (Monday 1 December 2008) and is looking forward to leading the team forward in what he classes as his dream job.

Explaining what attracted him to the position, he said: “It marries my chosen discipline of marine biology with the academic leadership skills I’ve developed in my career to date.

“But, more than this, I recognise the fact that the Shetland economy is largely based around the sea and maritime industries and I can see the critical role that the NAFC Marine Centre plays in managing this resource, as well as contributing to the sustainability of that economy and, ultimately, helping it to grow further.

“The NAFC Marine Centre is home to state-of-the-art resources including skilled staff and quality facilities.  It continues to shine in providing specialist training and education, research and advice for the marine and fishing industries.

“Shetland should be proud of the resource we have here in Scalloway, an institution that is at the forefront of marine research, management and training with so much to offer.  I look forward to assisting my team to build on these successes and, in doing so, support the people of Shetland.”
