Akbar Ali

I was born in northern Pakistan and completed my education to HSC examination in 1987.  I joined Pakistan Marine Academy (Branch of Pakistan Maritime Training Complex Karachi) in 1989 as deck cadet.  On completion of the BSc Maritime Studies from the University of Karachi in December 1990 and joined the Merchant Navy as Deck Cadet in 1991.

I've sailed as a deck cadet on various types of vessels.  I went to Australia in June 1995 for my Class 3/4 (Deck) examinations and achieved the Advanced Certificate in Marine Operations from Australian Maritime College in Launceston, Tasmania.  I passed my oral examination from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) after which I joined ship as 3rd mate.

After serving onboard a variety of vessels as 2nd/3rd mate and completing the required sea time, I joined South Tyneside College, South Shields in 1998 for my Class 2/1 (Deck) examinations and achieved HND in Maritime Operations.  I was awarded Class 2 Deck (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency in 1999 after passing the MCA oral examination.

Having served on a variety of vessels in different ranks, I passed my oral examination from MCA in June 2006 and was awarded Class 1 (Master) (Unlimited).

When the opportunity arose, I joined the nautical section of SSNS in May 2007 as Nautical Lecturer.
